    Happy New Year!

The start of a new year can go one of two ways, it can be refreshing or it can be stressful. Let's choose the better of the two, shall we? Here at the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, we are starting 2019 on great footing with a Business Plan in place. Feel free to take a look at what we'll be adding to our already existing programming in 2019. Please note that our Business Plan is a living document meaning we'll use it to guide our actions but if it needs tweaked, we will do so.

All of this will be presented at the Annual Gathering as well. The event will take place in late February. Look for details soon.

Lunch & Learn - Marketing Planning

Our first Lunch & Learn of 2019 is going to be one you will not want to miss; to make sure you start the new year organized in your business. Join us on Thursday, January 24 from noon-1:30 at the Knoxville Community School District Administration Building located at 309 W Main Street.

Local marketing professionals, Mike Benson of Peace Tree Brewing Company, Dena Gray-Fisher of Knoxville Hospital & Clinics, and Dave Hoke of Iowa State Savings Bank will be on our panel answering questions and giving tips on the importance of focused and strategically planned marketing. The session will touch on 5 of the biggest struggles for small business marketing:
    • Lack of time
    • Lack of understanding of target customer
    • Lack of resources/money
    • Lack of focus
    • Lack of differentiating

You will leave this session with a calendar resource of local events to help you with your promotions for the year. You will also have a chance at the end to bring your questions and struggles that can be answered in a small group setting with one of the speakers.

Lunch WILL be provided by Iowa State Savings Bank
There is no cost for members and $10 for non-members.
    Reserve your spot.

    Partnership Perk

Members of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce are now automatically Members of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. We collaborate with The Partnership to provide tools and resources to help make your business more efficient.

The Career Center also pulls Indeed.com job postings from within a 60-mile radius of Greater Des Moines (DSM).

Now is a great time to search the site for candidates as the fall semester campus recruitment season has come to a close and there are many new candidates for full-time and internship positions. There continues to be growing interest in careers in DSM from students all across the Midwest. Access the Career Center on The Partnership website today.

The most wonderful time of the year also comes with the hardest task of the year. What in the world do you get friends and family as gifts? Thankfully, we’ve put together a list for all of the different people you have in your life! And the best part? Everything is LOCAL to the Knoxville area provided by Knoxville Chamber of Commerce members.

For those with a love of local libations
The Knoxville area has no shortage of places to grab a good drink. How about gifting something someone can sit down and enjoy over good conversation that was made right in the area?

Tassel Ridge Winery Treat the hosts to some award winning La Crescent, Candleglow Red or White,  or Red White & Blue.

For those with a bit of tricky taste
Sometimes giving gifts isn’t so easy. For those hard to please, we’ve picked out a few good - maybe a little bit over-the-top ideas.

US Cellular – It’s not so over-the-top, but perfect for electronics lover in your life. How about a smart phone, tablet, or accessories?

Need to increase business? Looking for new ideas? Don’t want to reinvent the wheel? Interested in being in the same room as people who may be experiencing the same things as you?  One of the best ways to build a successful business, or grow a current one, is to network and attend local networking sessions. An hour of time could be the ROI you are looking for.

5 REASONS TO NETWORK (AND ATTEND BUSINESS AFTER HOURS!)

    1) Connect with other business owners in the community. Would you normally meet these people in your daily routine? Probably not. Connecting can lead to new business leads. Some contacts can refer you to other contacts. It also gives you the chance to be in the same room as others in similar industries that might be experiencing the same difficulties as you. It is good to be reminded that you are not alone.

    2) Word-of-Mouth Recommendations. This is an essential reason for networking! The more people you know what you do, the more recommendations you will get. Successful businesses are built on referrals and good public relations.

    3) Gain new ideas. Obtain excellent advice from people. Your dialog may inspire your new contact to come up with a solution that you haven’t thought of. Best of all it didn’t cost you a thing! Win-win right?

    4) Promote your business. Not only can you learn from others, but your attendance in networking events such as Business After Hours is a great way to get your business in front of others. Again, all it costs you is your time at the meeting. And you may end up gaining additional business in the process!

    5) Make great business relationships. Sharing ideas with each other and your enthusiasm with others like you creates strong business relationships. They, in turn, are very powerful forces in building your network! If you could learn one new strategy, gain a new business client, just by attending Business After Hours, is there any reason you wouldn’t attend? Of course networking is one piece of the business pie, but not networking sells yourself short and possibly not gain new insight, or new customers/clients. It's too valuable of a business strategy to not do so.

You know what the great news is? Here at the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, we host a Business After Hour once per quarter providing you opportunity for all of these things! Check out details on our upcoming Business After Hours.

    Chamber News

Fall Is Good & So Is Planning
The season still reads summer but the weather totally reads fall. For many businesses and non-profits, fall is a busy time of year tiding up everything to get ready for the end of the fiscal year and to start a new one. The Chamber is included in that as well. Our strategic planning process will begin in October with our current board but we would love to have feedback from you as well. We will be sending out a survey in the next couple of weeks. We would be grateful if you could take a couple of minutes to fill it out. Constructive feedback is the only way we can continue to be better for you. More details to come.

    RVTV
THRIVE Knoxville has been doing a great job preparing for WHO's RVTV arriving on Wednesday, September 5. This is a great event that brings the community together in downtown Knoxville. If you
are interested in participating or helping out, you can reach out to Heather Ussery and Katrina Nelson

If you come downtown to enjoy the festivities, representatives from the Chamber will be spreading the good word of Knoxville and having a fun photo booth in the gazebo on the courthouse lawn.

    2018 Knoxville Nationals

A HUGE Thank You to everyone who volunteered, decorated store windows, worked extra hours, housed guests, participated in the parade, or did anything to welcome visitors to our community during Nationals. We had a busy but successful week here at the Chamber. If you see any Knoxville Raceway employees, be sure to give them some kind words. Those folks work hard to put on such a great event.

If you have feedback about any Chamber programming during Nationals, please reach out. We are continuing to make notes for next year so we can continually strive to be better.

You should also be aware that the Knoxville Raceway has one last major event happening September 13-15. The 15th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals is the Raceway's second largest event of the year and brings in visitors from all over for a three day racing event. Be sure to welcome them kindly, they will be looking for things to do around town during the day.

    Lunch & Learn
The Chamber's next Lunch & Learn will be held on
Tuesday, September 18 at the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites from 12:00-1:00 pm. A representative from the City of Knoxville will be on hand to answer any constructive questions about the Highway 14 Road Diet project. We will also discuss how the project could impact businesses. Be sure to check your emails for more updates as the event gets closer.

    Business After Hours
Fall Business After Hours will be hosted by Bertrand Monument on Tuesday, October 2 from 4:30-6:00 pm. The event is open house style and a great way to connect to other Chamber members and learn about what the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce is up to.

    Welcome Lauren Bagby!
The Chamber is excited to host an intern from Central College this
fall. Lauren is a senior at Central majoring in Business Management. She will be focusing on creating an action plan to help improve Chamber and community involvement during the Knoxville Nationals.
